What are the most convincing examples?
When we want to bring facts to prove we will often use examples. An example is the most accessible type of fact, the easiest to retrieve under pressure, the most interesting and the most convincing.
But of course not all facts are created equal, and some are more convincing. Here is the ranking of the facts according to their persuasiveness
Most convincing: facts that are agreed upon by all
These are facts that are so convincing that people will say 'like da'. that as soon as you bring it up, people forget how much the argument is in your favor. In debate they are so strong that in debate I have seen groups lose with them because the judges felt that they did not bring anything original. Therefore, it is recommended to bring them only at the end of the theoretical explanation and not at the beginning.
So what are they and how are they used? These are facts that both the referees and the opposing team know and agree on. For example, if it is claimed that Israel is a chauvinist country because women do not reach the top of the pyramid, then telling about Golda Meir is so necessary that it seems trivial.
Least convincing: An example that only I know
Outside the world of debate, these are great examples. Personal stories convince people because they are believable and exciting. They also work great for us as speakers because they are easy to remember and easy to say.
The problem is that in debate they are just too easy. It's too convenient to 'make up' a personal story about how my parents dealt with inflation or how there were girls in my service who succeeded or failed to fight. Therefore, in the debate, these are suspicious examples
Almost the most convincing: a fact that must be true (otherwise we would know)
It's an interesting type of fact: facts we don't know we know. Such an example is especially great because the other party is sometimes surprised by it and does not know where it came from. For example, in a debate about some distant country (say Japan... or Malaysia) that we feel we have no knowledge about, we will find that basic facts about that country can take us far. For example, we can claim with confidence that its prime minister is a political person who is struggling to position himself as a leader, or say that foreign relations are very important to her, or even claim that that country has never been at war with Israel.
These are all self-evident facts
