Discussion summary: The problem of the low employment rate
This speech was presented as part of 'Hyde Park' on the state of the legal system in Israel The Public Debate Club In the public debate, the participants presented positions that touched on the welfare system and its limitations - legal, ethical and economic issues such as: the sources of inequality, different aspects of poverty, and different approaches to addressing the problem of poverty. Below is a summary of the positions presented as agreed upon during the discussion. The problem of an employment rate that is too low in IsraelShulamit - teacher and director of the enrichment programI will talk about the poverty gap in terms of employment. Historically there are big gaps and they have always tried to solve the problem. I will talk about two reasons for the disparities - environmental poverty and low participation in the labor force. A. Environmental poverty - a child who grows up in a developed environment, even if he goes to school, hears only a certain vocabulary and comes out uneducated. It would be possible to say "we can give him the opportunity to work" but in Israel even that is not possible. Because in addition to not giving him an education, we are importing foreign workers, which causes competition and unemployment. The second reason why it is difficult to find a job in Israel is low participation in the labor force. I urge you to find solutions to unemployment - to the environmental poverty that gives rise to laborers, and to the problem of limited employment of ultra-Orthodox and Arabs. About the public debate clubAs part of the club, a monthly 'Hyde Park' is held, that is, an open public discussion on a topical issue, in which each participant presents his positions in a limited time, and receives feedback from the other participants and the moderator Guy Yariv. The goal of the club is to improve public discourse and allow for in-depth discussion of controversial issues while learning rhetoric and improving speech and persuasion skills. |
